The South Atlantic Hydrographic Region stands out because it has a significant population, due to its economic development and its importance for tourism. The region begins in the north, near the border of the states of São Paulo and Paraná, and extends to the Chuí stream to the south. It has a total area of ​​187,522 square kilometers, equivalent to 2.2% of the country.

Covering portions of the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, the region had, in 2010, about 13.4 million inhabitants, 88% of which in urban areas. The region is home to 451 municipalities and 411 municipal offices, among which are the socioeconomic context: Paranaguá, Paraná; Joinville and Florianópolis, in Santa Catarina; Caxias do Sul, Santa Maria, Pelotas and the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul. The population of the region is mainly concentrated in the Litoral de Santa Catarina and Guaíba hydrographic units.

The 2010 sanitation indicators showed that 91% of the population was supplied by water, equivalent to the national average. The hydrographic units of the region had rates of service of the population by sewage, between 37 and 70%. The level of treated sewage was low, presenting values ​​between 10 and 19%.

The South Atlantic Hydrographic Region has the Atlantic Forest as the predominant original vegetation, which has undergone intense anthropic action. The Atlantic Forest extends from São Paulo to the north of Rio Grande do Sul.
