Hydrographic Region of Tocantins-Araguaia
R.H. Tocantins Araguaia.gif

The Hydrographic Region of Tocantins-Araguaia presents great potential for irrigated agriculture, especially for the cultivation of fruit, rice and other grains (corn and soybean). Currently, the need to use water for irrigation corresponds to 62% of the total demand of the region and is concentrated in the Araguaia subbasin due to flooding of rice. The irrigable area (by flood and other methods) is estimated at 230,197 hectares.

The Tocantins-Araguaia Hydrographic Region covers an area of 918,822 km² (11% of the national territory) and covers the states of Goiás (21%), Tocantins (30%), Pará (30%), Maranhão Gross (15%) and the Federal District (0.1%). Its configuration is aligned, with a South-North direction, following the predominant direction of the main watercourses, the Tocantins and Araguaia rivers, which unite in the northern part of the region, from where it is called the Tocantins river, in the Bay of the Island of Marajó

In 2010, about 8.6 million people lived in the hydrographic region (4.5% of the national population), with 76% in urban areas. The population density was 9.3 inhabitants / km², much smaller than the country's population density (22.4 inhabitants / km²).

In the Hydrographic Region of Tocantins-Araguaia are present the Amazon Forest biomes, to the north and northwest, and Cerrado in the other areas. Deforestation in the region intensified in the 1970s, with the construction of the Belém-Brasília highway, the Tucuruí hydroelectric dam, and the expansion of agricultural and mining activities. Currently, deforestation is mainly due to the activity of timber industries in the states of Pará and Maranhão.

With regard to basic sanitation indicators, according to the IBGE Demographic Census (2010), the level of water supply presents quite varied realities, with values between 1.2% in Araguaia Forest (PA) and 100% in New Alegre (TO), Divinópolis do Goiás (GO) and Araguainha (MT). The regional average of service of the population by sewage network is only 18% and, of the sewage percentage collected, only 6% is treated.
