With an area of ​​879,873 km2, the region covers the states of São Paulo (25% of the region), Paraná (21%) and the state of Paraná, with 32.1% of the national population. , Mato Grosso do Sul (20%), Minas Gerais (18%), Goiás (14%), Santa Catarina (1.5%) and the Federal District (0.5%).

In 2010, approximately 61.3 million people lived in the region (32% of the country's population), 93% in urban areas. The region has the most populous city in South America, São Paulo, with about 11.1 million inhabitants. Other important population centers are: Brasília, Curitiba, Goiânia, Campinas, Campo Grande and Uberlândia. Most of the population is concentrated in the hydrographic units of the Tietê and Grande rivers, which, together, correspond to 61% of the total population.

The growth of large urban centers, such as São Paulo, Curitiba and Campinas, in bedside rivers, has generated great pressure on water resources. This is because, at the same time as the demands increase, the availability of water decreases due to the contamination by domestic, industrial effluents and urban drainage.

Originally, the Hydrographic Region of Paraná presented the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes and five types of vegetation cover: Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, Araucária Forest, Decent Seasonal Forest and Semideciduous Seasonal Forest. The use of the soil in the region underwent major transformations throughout the economic cycles of the Country, which caused a great deforestation.

This hydrographic region has the highest demand for water resources in the country, equivalent to 736m3 / s, which corresponds to 31% of national demand. Irrigation is the largest user of water resources (42% of total demand), followed by industrial supply (27%).

With regard to basic sanitation indicators, in 2010, according to the Demographic Census (IBGE 2010), the percentages of the population served with water supply varied from 90% (Paranaíba) to 98% (Large). Most of the hydrographic units have a percentage above the Brazilian average of 91%. The percentage of the population served with sewage collection network in the hydrographic units varied between 38% (Piriqui) and 96% (Large). The percentages of sewage treatment varied from 33% (Piriqui) and 97% (Paranapanema), while the national average was 30%.
